NZ Honey

Buying honey direct from a New Zealand beekeeper

How do you buy honey directly from a New Zealand beekeeper?

Most New Zealand beekeepers selling direct do so through farmers' markets, their own website, or a roadside honesty box. Buying direct usually means single-source honey from a known site and season, and the chance to ask what was done to it — which is the part a supermarket jar cannot answer.

What to ask

What the price reflects

Single-source honey from remote country costs more than pasture clover for reasons that have nothing to do with marketing. Hives have to be trucked to a site and back, sometimes by helicopter for bush and high-country sites. The flow may last a fortnight. A poor flowering year can return almost nothing. Clover, by contrast, is abundant, accessible and predictable. For current supermarket prices per kilo to compare against, see how much honey costs in New Zealand.

We do not rank producers or publish a directory of them. Certifications, hive counts and years trading are facts held by the business, and we only point at what a producer states on their own site.
